The Beloved Beverage: Milk, and the Dua for Drinking milk

Ibn Abbas said that the favorite drink of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was milk. It was a noble habit of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he used to drink milk and sometimes mix cold water with the milk. Drinking milk mixed with water is beneficial for those in hot regions as it moderates the effectiveness of milk.

Milk is a blessed drink. It is not only a means of nourishing the body but also a way to remember and acknowledge the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. Milk is a natural source of vital nutrients Allah has provided for our well-being.

Dua when Drinking Milk - Hadith

ٰIbn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said :

“Whoever is given food by Allah, let him say: Allahumma barik lana fihi wa arzuqna khairan minhu (O Allah, bless it for us and provide us with something better than it). And whoever is given milk to drink by Allah, let him say: Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu (O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it). For I do not know of any food or drink that suffices, apart from milk.”

How to Drink milk according to sunnah?

There are 3 Sunnah for drinking milk:

  1. Say Bismillah before drinking milk.
  2. Drink milk in three breaths. When Prophet – peace be upon him – drank something, he used to drink it in three breaths, (he used to breathe three times in between). Therefore, while drinking milk, it is Sunnah to drink it in three breaths.
  3. Mix some water in milk. Prophet SAW sometimes mixes cold water with milk.
  4. Recite Dua after drinking milk: Allahumma Barik lana Feehi wa Zidna Minhu.

The Prophet ﷺ chose Milk

Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

I was raised to the Lote Tree and saw four rivers, two of which were coming out and two going in. Those which were coming out were the Nile and the Euphrates, and those which were going in were two rivers in paradise. Then I was given three bowls:

1. one containing milk, and
2. another containing honey, and
3. a third containing wine.

I took the bowl containing milk and drank it. It was said to me, “You and your followers will be on the right path (of Islam).” Sahih al-Bukhari 5610 in another Hadith; Gabriel said, “Thanks to Allah Who guided you to the Fitra (i.e. Islam); if you had taken the wine, your followers would have gone astray. Sahih al-Bukhari 4709

is it necessary to Rinse the mouth after drinking milk?

It is Mustahab to rinse after drinking milk.

The Prophet said: ‘Rinse your mouths after drinking milk for there is some greasiness in it.”

This order is not mandatory. Because Abu Dawud has narrated a hadith from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ drank milk, he neither rinsed nor performed ablution. So it is Mustahab.

Does Drinking milk break ablution?

The reason given in the hadith for the order of rinse of the mouth is that its purpose is to clean the mouth. This hadith is not related to performing or breaking ablution.

Remaining grease in the mouth after eating and drinking is also against the principles of hygiene, so special care should be taken to clean the mouth by drinking milk or eating chicken food.

What Does Quran say about drinking milk?

Allah Suhanahu Watala said:

وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِي الْأَنْعَامِ لَعِبْرَةً ۖ نُّسْقِيكُم مِّمَّا فِي بُطُونِهِ مِن بَيْنِ فَرْثٍ وَدَمٍ لَّبَنًا خَالِصًا سَائِغًا لِّلشَّارِبِينَ

And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies – between excretion and blood – pure milk, palatable to drinkers. (An’Nahl:66)

The milk is a miracle among many miracles of the Quran. See the power of Allah, how Allah produce milk between dung and blood. What type of filter is set up inside an animal so the milk does not mix with waste as well as blood? Obvious clear milk comes out.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’la informed us 14 centuries ago that we produce milk this way; there was no ultrasound equipment at that time. However He claimed the creation of milk. Subahanallah!

And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat. (21مؤمنون)`
