15 Hadith about Imam Hussain – The Grandson of Prophet Muhammad

15 Hadith about Imam Hussain

10 hadith about Imam hussain ؓ - the grandson of the holy prophet muhammad ﷺ

Allah Almighty bestowed upon our Prophet ﷺ, sons, daughters and grandchildren, to complement his human nature and fulfill the needs of the human soul. And His children are all from the Ummul Momineen Syedatuna Khadija RA, except Ibrahim, Ibrahim was from Ummul Momineen Maria Qibtiya RA.

It was the wisdom of Allah that the Prophet ﷺ did not have any male children left. All of them died in childhood. There were many wisdoms of Allah in it. This is comfort and consolation for those who have no children or whose children die. Also, this is one of the tribulations for the Prophet  and the most severe tribulation among people befalls the Prophets. On the authority of Saad bin Abi Waqqas, he said: (I said, O Messenger of God: What People are most severely afflicted? He said: The Prophets, then the next best, then the next best.” Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi.

Imam Navavi Said:

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had three sons: QasimAbdullah and Ibrahim. with the name of Qasim Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was given nickname (Abul-Qasimﷺ), Qasim was born before the prophethood, and he died when he was two years old, and Abdullah was called Al-Tayyib and Al-Tahir, he was born after the prophethood, and Ibrahim was born in Medina in the eight AH, and he died there in the ten AH when he was seventeen months old or Eighteen.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had daughters: Zainab, whom Abu al-Aas ibn al-Rabee married, and he was the son of her maternal aunt Hala bint Khuwaylid, Fatima married to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, and Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum, whom Uthman ibn Affan married.

Grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

1. Children from Zainab bint Muhammad Ali son of Abul Aas and Umamah daughter Abul Aas.  Ali died in childhood

2. Ruqayyah bint Muhammad ﷺ She got married with Usman bin Affan. Usman migrated to Habasha with Ruqyah. And a son Abdullah was born their, who died at the age of seven.

3. Umm Kulsoom had no children

4. Children from Fatimah bint Muhammad : Muhsin, Hassan, Hussain and Zainab and Ummu Kulsoom. Muhsin and died in childhood.

Our Prophet used to pay special attention to his grandchildren, through which his children, grandchildren and the whole family would feel the atmosphere of mercy, intimacy, tenderness and love.

The Prophet used to give his grandchildren the best names, adorn them, caress them, carry them, kiss them, ride them on his back, be kind to them, and take them with him to the mosque, and even carry them in his prayers, pray for them, guide them because of the impact of the gift on the grandson’s heart.

In this blog post, you will see many examples from the biography of Sayeduna Hussain Radiyallahu Anhu and his life.

- Hadith 01

Blessed birth of Syedna Hussain ibn ali radiyallahu anh

Hussain Ibn Ali (RA) was born on the 5th of Sha’ban al-Mu’zam, 4 AH.

Before his blessed birth, Umm al-Fazl, the wife of Abbas, had a dream that a piece of flesh had separated from the blessed body of the Holy Prophet ﷺ . The Holy Prophet  said: Don’t be sad, it’s a blessed dream. Soon, my daughter, Syedah Fatima al-Zahra will give birth to a son, whose upbringing will be your responsibility.

So sometime after this dream, Hussain (RA) was born. Thus the beautiful pair of the princes of Paradise, Hassan (RA) and Hussain (RA) was completed.

- hadith 2 -3

Who Performed the Tahneek and aqeeqah of Syedna Hussain (RA)?

What is Tahneek?

Ans. Tahneek is an Arabic word which means putting something sweet such as dates, in the infant’s mouth after birth. Usually, before milk. It is a noble practice in Islam.

As soon as the news was received, the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) came and put His tongue in the mouth of the blessed new born for blessing, said AZAN in the right ear and IQAMAH in the left ear. This fortunate prince, who was the first to receive blessed saliva and to hear a beautiful voice, was named Hussain by the Holy Prophet.

Prophet utter the call (Azan) in ear of Hassan and Hussain when born and ordered that.

The Messenger of Allah offered the Aqeeqah for Hassan and Hussain, May Allah be please with them, two rams for each.

Hussain (RA) was so beautiful like his namesake, resembling the most beautiful person in the universe, Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH). He was the star of the Prophet’s (PBUH) and Companions’ eyes.

- Hadith 4

Ali ؓ used to named his sons 'Harb'

‘Ali said, “When al-Husayn was born, I named him Harb (war). The Prophet came and said, ‘Show me your son. What have you named him?’ ‘Harb,’ we replied. He said, “He is Hasan.’ When al-Hussain was born, I named him Harb. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came and said, ‘Show me your son. What have you named him?’ ‘Harb,’ we replied. He said, “He is Husayn.’ When we had a third son, I named him Harb. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came and said, ‘Show me your son. What have you named him?’ ‘Harb,’ we replied. He said, “He is Muhassin.” Then he said, ‘I have named them according to the names of the sons of Harun:

Resembles Of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: al-Hasan most resembles the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) between the navel and the head, and al-Husain most resembles him in what is lower than that.

- Hadith 6

Two sweet basils in the world

Ibn Umer (رضي الله عنه) said:  I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Indeed Al-Hasan and Al-Husain – they are my two sweet basils in the world.'”

- Hadith 7

Prophet's Love with Hassan and Hussain ؓ

The people of Medina used to see the love of the Holy Prophet for Hassan and Hussain RA. They used to smile and wonder how much Holy prophet loved his grandchildren. Sometimes he would sit on the mimbar next to him, sometimes they would ride on the shoulders, sometimes the prostrations get prolonged, because the Princes of Heaven are riding non the back. Sometime the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) performing prayer and the Princes of Heaven are clinging to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) body. Sometimes Prophet (ﷺ) run with these children.

Once upon a time Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) come down from the member in love with their grandchildren. As narrated Buraidah:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was delivering a Khutbah to us when Al-Hasan and Al-Husain (RA) came, wearing red shirts, walking and falling down. So the messenger of Allah (RA) descended from the Mimbar and carried them, and placed them in front of Him. Then He said: Allah spoke Truth: Indeed, your wealth and you children are a trial (64:15). I looked at these two children walking and falling down, and I could not bear patiently anymore until I interrupted my talk and picked them up. Tirmidhi: 3774

Grandchildren’s smile was the peace of the heart and their cry used to tear the heart.

- Hadith 8

Hussain's ؓ crying Hurts Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Once Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) Heard the sound of Hussain’s crying, He said to His daughter Sayyida Fatimah:

“don’t you know that His crying hurts me?”

- Hadith 9

easy way to get Allah's love

Once the love of grandchildren reached its peak and the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said:

‏ ‏.“Husain RA is from me, and I am from Husain. Allah loves whoever loves Husain. Husain is Sibt among the Asbat.”

A great tribe. Meaning, Al-Husain would have many offspring, such that they would become a great tribe. And this has indeed occurred. Tuhfat al- Ahwadhi 4/341

- Hadith 10

Whoever hates them...

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ مَنْ أَحَبَّ الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ فَقَدْ أَحَبَّنِي وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَهُمَا فَقَدْ أَبْغَضَنِي ‏“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever loves Hasan and Husain, loves me; and whoever hates them, hates me.'” IbnMajah:143

- Hadith 11

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to smell and hug his grandsons

Anas Bin Malik narrated:

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: “Which of the people of your house are most beloved to you?” He said: “Al-Hasan and Al-Husain.” And he used to say to Fatimah: “Call my two sons for me so that I may smell them.” And he would hug them. Tirmidhi: 3772

- Hadith 12

I love them, so love them, and love who love them

Hassan Hussain, Indeed I love them, so love them, and love who love them.

What a beautiful words were spoken by Prophet ﷺ about Hasnain Karimin Radiallahu anhuma:

Usamah Bin Zaid RA said:

I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) one night concerning some need, so the Prophet (ﷺ) came out while he was covering up something, and I did not know what it was. Once I had tended to my need, I said: ‘What is this that you were covering up?’ So he uncovered it, and I found it was Hasan and Husain ﷺ upon his hips. So he said:

“These are my two sons, and the sons of my daughter. O Allah! Indeed, I love them, so love them, and love who love them.”

So it is the easy way to get the love of Allah by loving these princes from the bottom of heart, because this is the popular prayer of the Prophet (ﷺ).

I love them, so love them and love those who love them. Hasan and Husain RA
Hadith about Imam Hussain

- Hadith 13

Prophet ﷺ playing with his grandson Hussain ؓ

Yaala Al-Aamiri narrated: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to a feast which they were invited. They were passing through the street, children were playing on the way and Sayyiduna Imam Hussain (RA) was also playing with these children. When the Holy Prophet saw Imam Hussain (RA) playing, he ignored everything and decided to run and catch Imam Hussain (RA).

The Prophet ﷺ ran to catch them, Imam Hussain رضي اللہ عنہ started to run here and there. The Prophet ﷺ also ran behind Him here and there to catch Him. Companions and others are watching this scene.

The Prophet ﷺ is making Imam Hussain laugh and running behind him to catch him and making him happy. Even the Prophet ﷺ caught them. Then the Prophet ﷺ picked them up, put his blessed tongue in their mouths in front of all the Companions. Then he kissed them and said:

“Husain is part of me and I am part of Him, May Allah love those who love Husain. Husain is a tribe among tribes.”

They had gone out with the Prophet to a meal to which they had been invited, and Husain was there playing in the street. The Prophet came in front of the people and stretched out his hands, and the child started to run here and there. The Prophet made him laugh until he caught him, then he put one hand under his chin and the other on his head and kissed him, and said, “Husain is part of me and I am part of him. May Allah love those who love Husain. Husain is a tribe among tribes.” Ibn Majah: 144

A message for the Ummah in love with Hasnain Karimin

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to show great love for Hasnain Karimin (RA). Was the Prophet’s spontaneous expression of love for Hasnain Karimin without any purpose? No, it is not like that, but there is a message for the Muslim Ummah in this kind of love. Let us first study a blessed hadith and then take a look at the message it contains:

Ibn Abbas RA said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was carrying Hasan bin Ali upon His shoulder, so a man said: “What as excellent mount you are riding, O child,” So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “And what an excellent rider he is.” Tirmidhi: 3784

It is clear from the hadith that this incident is not inside the house, that is why an outsider is expressing his opinion on this blessed act of the Prophet. This means that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was walking with Imam Hussain (RA) in the street.

Now, on the one hand, keep in mind the rank, glory, majesty, and value of the Holy Prophet and see this process as well. We don’t do this, whether it is our son, grandson, grandchild, whom we love very much. We don’t walk in the street carrying them on our shoulders, but we are ashamed.

If the Holy Prophet ﷺ had to keep this love only for himself, he would have done this act within the four walls of the house. But He did this act in the front of all people.

The reason for the Prophet ﷺ doing this act in front of all the people, this behavior of the Prophet ﷺ to love Imam Hussain (RA) is actually that the Prophet ﷺ is giving a message to the Ummah that this is my love for Hussain (RA). This is my way of loving him. Therefor, O Muslim Ummah, you should also fall in love with Hasnain Karimin (Radi Allahu Anhuma) in the same way, so that you may be blessed with my love through this means.

- Hadith 15

Imam Hussain ؓ Riding on the Prophet's back in prayer:

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Shaddad, that his father said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us for one of the night time prayers, and he was carrying Hasan or Husain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and put him down, then he said the Takhir and started to pray. He prostrated during his prayer, and made the prostration lengthy.” My father said: “I raised my head and saw the child on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was prostrating, so I went back to my prostration. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished praying, the people said: ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ you prostrated during the prayer for so long that we thought that something had happened or that you were receiving Revelation.’ He said: ‘No such thing happened. But my son was riding on my back and I did not like to disturb him until he had enough.’” (Sahih)

Martyrdom of Imam Hussain ؓ

- The letters of Kufis

On receiving numerous letters from the Kufis, Sayyiduna Hussain (RA) decided to set out on a journey. Before starting the journey, he sent his cousin Muslim bin Aqeel to inspect Kufa. Twelve thousand Kufis pledged allegiance to Muslim bin Aqeel. Also, Bashir, the ruler of Kufa, treated Muslim bin Aqeel with kindness. Affected by the sentiments of the Kufis, he informed Hussain that the conditions were favorable for him to come. Therefore Sayyiduna Hussain started his journey towards Kufa.

- Yazid deposed the governor of kufa Numan bin basher

When Yazid found out that the ruler of Kufa Bashir, was being lenient with Muslim bin Aqeel and was not taking any action against him, Yazid immediately deposed the current governor Bashir. And appointed Ubaidullah bin Ziyad as governor of Kufa. Ubaidullah bin Ziyad reached Kufa and announced that whoever remained loyal to Yazid would be spared be spared his life, otherwise he would be killed.

After this declaration of Ibn Ziyad, the people of Kufa broke their promise to Hussain. During the journey Hussain also received information that Ubaidullah bin Ziyad had martyred Muslim bin Aqeel. Hearing this, some of the people who came with Husain RA ended their journey and returned, but Hussain RA continued.

- Syeduna Hussain rejected to surrender

So Hussain and his caravan continued the journey, reaching a little further than Qadisiya, Hur bin Yazid met with an army of 1,000 armed horsemen. Hussain showed all the letters of the Kufis and said that you have invited me, now if you change your mind, I will go back. But your request was not accepted. So this short convoy finally reached Karbala on 2/Muharram al-Haram 61 AH.

Ibn Ziyad through a letter asked Hussain to obey us with his army. Hussain flatly refused. Therefore, an army of thousands was raised in front of a few people, i.e. 72/ people. 10/ Muharram al-Haram 61 AH Umar bin Saad attacked with his army in Karbala field. Thus began the regular battle.

- the army of traitors prevailed and surrounded Hussain's tent and burned

Deaths and martyrdoms continued on both sides. Finally, the army of traitors prevailed and surrounded Hussain’s tent and burned it and all of them including Sayyiduna Hussain and many members of his family and companions were martyred. In the end, the prophet’s prediction proved to be true.

- who is responsible of martyrdom of Syeduna Hussain?

The army sent by Yazid martyred Imam Hussain RA. If Yazid wanted, he could have stopped it, so Yazid is directly responsible for Hussain’s martyrdom. Therefore, the position of majority of scholars is that there is no doubt that Hussain was martyred during the reign of Yazid and his army. So Yazid is directly responsible.

- what is the Lesson of Karbala?

The bravery and patience with which Syedna Hussain endured the sufferings and difficulties in the field of Karbala is an eternal story of freedom, courage, patience and independence.

By not succumbing to the forces of falsehood, Hussain raised the flag of supremacy of the principles of truth and justice, freedom of thought and the sovereignty of God, and laid the foundation of Islamic traditions.

Hussain’s sacrifice is a supreme example for those who stand up against falsehood. Thousands of pages of the history of Islam are illuminated with the virtues, character and achievements of Sayyiduna Hussain (RA). An important message from the tragedy of Karbala is that “one can cut off the head for the truth, but one cannot bow down in front of falsehood.”
